CerebralMechanics provides tools for the behavioral neurosciences. The company was formed in 2000 by two visual neuroscientists, Dr. Glen Prusky and Dr. Rob Douglas when it became apparent that the Visual Water Task (Prusky, West & Douglas, 2000a) was a powerful tool that was potentially useful in a wide range of research environments. CerebralMechanics provides the specialized components needed for this visual discrimination task. We and other laboratories continue to use Vista, and new versions will be released. Although Vista has become the gold standard for visual psychophysics in rodents, it is not ideal and we have been working on alternative tests. In 2004 we developed on virtual reality optomotor system that allows visual acuity and contrast sensitivity to be measured rapidly in untrained and unrestrained small rodents (Prusky, Alam, Beekman & Douglas, 2004). This is now available as the OptoMotry system in two sizes. We continue to develop visual and cognitive tasks which we plan on making available to the research and educational communities. |
