OptoMotry is a virtual optomotor task for rapidly assessing rodent acuity and contrast sensivity. The system uses 4 computer monitors to create a virtual reality chamber. From the point of view of a mouse or rat in the middle, they are at the center of a rotating drum which is covered with a sinusoidal grating. An animal surrounded by a moving pattern will make reflexive head tracking movements in the same direction as the visual motion. No tracking occurs when the pattern is not visible, and this allows us to measure the spatial frequency and contrast sensitivity thresholds. No training is needed, and several thresholds can be measured daily. This allows changes during development, retinal degeneration and/or experimental manipulations to be studied.
