Vista is a program that conducts visual discrimination testing in small animals. A variety of test stimuli can be produced, and the program keeps track of randomization and responses. Typically a group of animals can be run together, with the animals being tested in an interleaved manner. Vista was developed for use in the Visual Water Task (Prusky et al, 2000), and has been been used extensively in several laboratories to study the visual capabilities of rats and mice. The non-computer hardware required for this task is also available from CerebralMechanics but it is not necessary to buy it from CerebralMechanics. Many universities have facilities for making such equipment. Furthermore Vista software may be of use in other quite different tasks that may be more suitable for other species. The main limitation is the display technology. In particular, primates have very high acuities, well beyond what Vista can produce reliably. |
